no.1 mellor road . since 1902
born from over 125 years of local history
Our intertwined story of local families dates back to the mid 1800s. Alexander Burslem, together with wife Ester and their eight children, built a successful family business as Brick Makers and General Carriers. In 1887, daughter Elizabeth Burslem married local farmer David Leather, living in the Ladybridge Barns that were recently renovated by one of our founders, Nick Porter.
On the death of Alexander in 1889, his estate funded the building of a bakery for Ester at No.1 Mellor Road, completed in 1902. Recorded as being run by his children Ellen, Lily and John, records become fragmented during the 1930s.
From 1939 and surviving WWII, the bakery changed hands from the Halls, to the Giddings and eventually to the Butterworths. This historic building even survived a near miss with the railway, when in 1964 a train de-railed and crashed at the neighbouring bend in the tracks.
bringing no.1 mellor road back to life
a local landmark comes back from the brink
No.1 Mellor Road has stood at the heart of Cheadle Hulme for generations — a locally listed building shaped by the people, families and businesses who passed through its doors. Time leaves its mark on places like this. But so does care.
What you see today is not simply a renovation, but a restoration of spirit.
Every brick cleaned, every detail considered, every space reimagined with quiet respect for what came before. This has been a labour of patience, pride and genuine love for the building and the community around it.
Before us came the Burslams, the Giddings and the Butterworths — names woven into the story of this corner of Mellor Road.
We don’t replace that history. We honour it. Today, as Dos Hermanos, we become the next custodians of this special place.
Our role is simple: to protect its character, celebrate its past and fill it once again with warmth, conversation and life.
from two bakeries to two brothers
how the story began
Nick and Jonny met at Bruntwood Primary School in 1971, just four years old. From that day on, they became brothers in everything but name; growing up side by side, sharing life, laughter and a quiet promise that one day they would create something of their own.
More than fifty years later, Dos Hermanos is that promise brought to life. This is not simply a restaurant. It is a place shaped by friendship, family and the belief that the best moments happen around a table; talking, laughing, sharing food and never quite wanting the night to end.
In Spain, they call it sobremesa. To us, it simply feels like home.
